Smiles a mile wide greeted the news that the Cancer Memorial Golf Challenge raised more than $9,000 for the Cancer Outpatients Appeal.

The golf event was organised by Nicole Smith, her father Gary Cooper and other family members, in association with the Marlin Hotel Social Golfers and was held at the Mollymook Golf Club.

Organisers didn't expect to raise such a large amount from the early morning golf tournament.

"We are just amazed and grateful for all the support we received for the event," Nicole said.

"I'd really like to thank the Golf Club, the Marlin Hotel and all the sponsors and donors who helped to make it such a success.

"It's great to be able to help raise funds for the Cancer House, because we need those services so much in this area."

Cancer Outpatients Appeal president Dee Carrington said she got a surprise when Nicole called to tell her they had raised more than $9,000.

"What a wonderful tribute to the memory of her mother and other loved ones with cancer who have passed away," Dee said.

"Thanks to Nicole and her family and the Marlin Social Golfers for all their work in organising the event.

"Nicole literally had her hands full already with a new baby, which makes their achievement even more incredible.

"Thanks to Mollymook Golf Club for their continued support and to Max Bayliss for running the auction and all those local businesses who once again demonstrated their generous support.

"We really appreciate it."
